Chris Lewis Chris started playing the cornet at the age of six, being
taught firstly by Derek Curtis at Central Methodist Church, Pontefract, West
Yorkshire. A year later he started playing for his first brass band, Knottingley
Youth Brass (now Knottingley Concert Brass). He has also been taught by Rita
James and Alan Morrison and has attended workshops held by Jim Shepard and James
Watson. At the age of 12 he become the bands youngest principal cornet and
joined the National Methodist Youth Brass Band a year later. He has since played with many bands in Yorkshire at various
levels in concerts and contests and has travelled the world touring with bands
and as a soloist. His overseas visits have included Sweden, the Baltic States,
Germany, America and Jamaica. He has also played in front of HRH Queen Elizabeth
II and HRH the Prince of Wales on many occasions and confesses that these
moments are more nervous than any contest. Since
taking over the baton last year, he has started to teach brass privately and
within the band, helping the training band in technical areas of brass playing.
With this he is currently working towards his ATCL in musical direction and his
Certificate in Teaching from the ABRSM. Should anyone be interested in private
tuition then please contact him via email at lewischris@hotmail.com.
As well as conducting BMSB he also plays Solo Cornet for Ipswich and Norwich Co-Operative Band, and helps other bands out where he can. He says of BMSB “It is an honour and a pleasure to conduct the band. They are constantly striving to achieve better things through their playing and service to the church. They are one of the friendliest groups of people I’ve ever worked with in the brass band movement.” . |
